Recycling project

Ibasho Philippines elders have been collecting plastic bottles from their community last three years. We are so proud of their continuous effort! Can we mobilize elders as teachers to reduce plastic usage and to live with environmentally sustainable manner in other regions too?

Ibasho House in Ofunato Japan celebrated 6 year anniversary

The Ibasho model was pioneered in Japan after the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011. In its first six years of operation, Ibasho House in Japan served more than 40,000 people and hosted over 1,250 events in which elders shared their knowledge with younger generations by cooking traditional foods, organizing traditional festivals, teaching young people how to use old equipment without electricity, and more. Elders operated the Ibasho house in the self-sustainable manner, raising funds through organic garden, farmer’s market, ramen noodle shop, cafe, and writing grants for their operation and multi-generational programs. Ibasho Philippines successfully organized the opening ceremony

Ibasho Philippines organized the opening ceremony for their “Ibasho” hub in the Barangay Bagong Buhay today. I am so proud of our elders to finally make this happen after few years of their hard work. My heartfelt thank you to all the people who helped this project in various occasions and capacities. Nepal project updates: A larger vegetable garden and a new bamboo shed

Started in July 2016 as one of the four livelihood projects by the Ibasho Nepal community members, the vegetable farm has become a gathering place besides being just a place for plantation. On 20 April 2018, the community members of Ibasho Nepal signed the lease for a larger space (10952 square feet) to continue the vegetable farming. Seasonal vegetables have been the main source of income for those involved along with pickles made from the vegetables harvested. Flowers are also grown targeting festivals. On-site Peer to Peer knowledge exchange program Barangay Bagong Buhay, Ormoc, The Philippines

A group of 12 community members from Ibasho Nepal and Japan traveled to join the elders in Ormoc to participate in the Peer to Peer knowledge exchange program after the two days symposium at the Asian Development Bank in Manila, Philippines. The onsite program was organized mainly by the elders from Barangay Bagong Buhay, Ormoc on June 23-25, 2018 with the support of the World Bank, GFDRR. The participants were able to visit the Ibasho programs in Ormoc, and other local NGOs livelihood programs to learn about sustainable operation among the community members. Creating Ibasho: Physical and social infrastructure that empowers elders and strengthens communities On June 20-21, 2018, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the World Bank hosted a symposium titled “Creating Ibasho: Physical and social infrastructure that empowers elders and strengthens communities.” The symposium’s aim was to build on knowledge gained by participants in a project called Ibasho, which empowers elders to become active and relevant members of their communities by developing and managing a physical infrastructure that becomes a community gathering place.
